URAA PROGRAMMES AND ACTIVITIES

Advocacy and Awareness Creation:

URAA focuses on advocacy and awareness creation as a vehicle for change on ageing issues and contributions of older persons in our communities. Through this, URAA seeks to draw the attention of policy makers, stakeholders and the general public to the plight of older persons and change the negative attitude towards older persons.

Livelihood/Resource mobilization for the benefit of older persons: URAA mobilizes resources from international & Local patners; for older persons' activities;

a) Poverty alleviation/reduction through income generating activities;

b) Shelter renovation/Construction;

c) Care for older persons in emergency situations;

d) Adult education and functional literacy.

Capacity Building for member organizations: Training and supporting older persons to form and manage their associations/groups and enhance their organizational and institutional sustainability. As an umbrella organization, URAA has initiated and encouraged the development of older persons' grass root groups. It also provides technical advice and information to such grassroot organizations.

Health and Care: URAA is involved in training and supporting of community volunteers; Village Health Teams to offer Home Based Care and health Support to older persons headed households especially those affected by HIV/AIDS. To improve on HIV/AIDS and provide psychosocial support to older persons, URAA endeavors to train and facilitate older person volunteers as peer educators and counselors.

HIV/AIDS among older persons and those under their care: HIV/AIDS is treated as a cross-cutting issue in all URAA programmes and activities. URAA seeks to increase knowledge on HIV/AIDS and its impact among older persons; this is done through sensitization of older persons on the causes, preventive measures; how and where to receive treatment.

Networking with other older persons' Assocications, Government especially MGLSD, other line Ministries and CSOs: As an umbrella organization, URAA has encouraged and initiated the development of grassroot groups. URAA also coordinates activities of organizations/groups engaged in promoting the welfare of older persons in Uganda. URAA also provides technical advice to such organizations/groups. It also works along side with other Civi Society Organizations, Ministry of Gender, labor and Social Development, and other line Ministries in improving the livelihoods of older people in Uganda.
